Loft Conversions
What is a loft conversion?
A loft conversion is a process of adding living space on top of a building. We can do this type of conversion to many different homes, including detached, semi-detached and terraced houses. A loft is usually located above the garage or an extension on your home’s roofline that doesn’t have any windows – making it perfect for creating additional floor space!
Benefits of loft conversion
• You will add extra value to your property without doing too much work yourself. Many people use their lofts as spare bedrooms because they’re often bigger than bedrooms found downstairs; however, you could also create office spaces or study areas with this extra room! With such little effort involved, it’s a risk-free way of getting more value for your home.
• You can get the reins on that storage – do you have stuff cluttering up your garage, bedroom, or attic? Having an extra room means you’ll be able to use this space and remove all those boxes from under your bed!
• Loft conversions are often high ceilings, so if you want somewhere with high ceilings but don’t want to deal with stairs, converting part of your roof is definitely for you.
Types of loft conversion
Roof window conversion
The roof window conversion is a great way to bring in a lot of natural light and give you access to the roof for maintenance purposes.
Dormer conversion
With this type of loft room, builders can work with what is already there on your roof by just adding an extension without changing the shape or size of it. This means that dormers are often tiny rooms that tend not to be big enough for most bedrooms, but they make good home offices or playrooms!
Hip-to-Gable
This type of roof allows you to be creative and provides extra space due to the larger area it creates on your roof. Hip-to-gable conversions are often seen with additional windows, which help bring light into the room.
Mansard conversion
A mansard conversion is very similar to a hip-to-gable loft room in the way that they both have two sloping roofs. However, with this type of conversion, you can use more than one dormer window and create some lovely little nooks for children’s bedrooms or even an en suite bathroom!
Gambrel conversion
This loft room is very similar to a hip-to-gable conversion, and it has the same roof style. However, with this type of conversion, you can also add two dormer windows, allowing for some lovely added light into your home!
Hipped roof
If you want something unique, then going for a hipped roof will be perfect because they are not seen everywhere! A hipped roof is great because it allows you to have two dormer windows to make your room look bigger.
Velux conversion
A Velux window in a loft conversion can be perfect if you want natural light but don’t need any extra floor space. If the ceiling height of your roof is not high enough, then this type of window would suit you perfectly!
What is involved in a loft conversion?
During a loft conversion, we start by stripping your loft back to a blank canvas so we can start from scratch. This will enable us to remove any old insulation, plasterboard, and beams if needed! Once this is complete, it’s time for the fun part – putting up your new floorboards (we recommend engineered wood as this will be more durable).
After installing your boards, you might want some extra storage space, so we put in some fitted wardrobes or shelving units, depending on what you’d like. We also install all of the electrics, including lights, power sockets, and heating (if required) along with an alarm system too!
A bathroom would always come before a kitchen, but sometimes people don’t realise how much natural light they could bring into their homes by adding a dormer which is why it comes so high on the list.
Loft Conversions for Kitchens and Rooms
If you don’t have any storage space in your kitchen, you’re probably sick of moving your pots and pans around every time you need to get something out or put it away, so that a loft conversion would be ideal for this.
Loft Conversion refurbishment
If the roof space isn’t being used for anything, you could always ask us to install insulation within the walls that will keep heat in during winter and keep cool air inside your home if it’s hot outside (it never is).
Frequently asked questions
How much is a loft conversion?
It all depends on how big you want your new bedroom/office/kitchen/playroom to be! We can do these measurements upfront with our customers free of charge. If they’re large rooms, we might recommend adding extra insulation, which will increase the price.
Do roofers do loft conversions?
Yes! We can also offer you an inspection of your current home to see if it’s even possible for a conversion, and then we’ll give you some ideas as to how we could go about doing one on your property. Once we’ve got this information from you, we’ll provide more accurate prices, so feel free to contact us any time with questions or inquiries. Of course, there is always more information online and in our brochures, which would help too, so don’t hesitate to check them out before getting in touch with us directly.
Can I install solar panels in my loft room?
Yes, you can install solar panels on your roof and then use the electricity generated to power appliances in your loft conversion or anywhere else around the house.
What type of roof do you need for a loft conversion?
As long as you have some roof, then the chances are that we can convert it into a loft. However, if your current house has an average-sized steep pitched roof on top with two skylights (preferably Velux), then we would say that this is ideal for conversion purposes. If there’s only one window in place or any other standard part of the structure, though, don’t worry! We work on all sorts, so get in touch to find out more information about what else you could need doing too.
How tall does a roof have to be for a loft conversion?
The minimum height is around the same as your current ceiling. It isn’t just to do with the headroom but also health and safety regulations.
